Gunmen killed Nelson Adepoyigi, the kidnapped chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ose Local Government Area (LGA) of Ondo State.
The chairman of the local government, Clement Kolapo Ojo, confirmed the unfortunate incident. He revealed that the heartless gunmen killed Nelson Adepoyigi despite efforts to secure his freedom.
Speaking to the newsmen on Sunday morning, he said after killing the APC Chairman, the gunmen released two ransom bearers they initially tied down.
“While we are grateful that the two volunteers have now regained their freedom, it is deeply saddening and utterly painful that the life of Mr. Nelson Adepoyigi was brutally cut short by his captors.
”The entire leadership and people of Ose Local Government mourn this tragic loss,” the chairman said.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and political associates of the deceased,” he added.
According to a report by Daily Trust, the operatives of the Nigerian Police have stormed the forest over the incident. It was gathered that they are currently searching for the corpse of the slain politician.
A senior police officer confirmed the incident to the newsmen, stating that security officers are after the criminals.
“Yes, it’s true that the man has been killed, but our men are in the forest. They are working to locate his corpse,” he said.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Mr. Adepoyigi was abducted at the entrance of his house on the Ifon/Owo road. The chairman of the APC at Ward 5, in ifon, was abducted on Monday and was killed a few days later.
It was gathered that immediately after he was abducted, the gunmen demanded a N100 million ransom from his family. The amount was later negotiated to N5 million.
In a surprising development, the two ransom bearers -Bayode Loco and Isimeri – were detained by the bandits on Wednesday. It was reported that the gunmen demanded N30 million to free three captives, including the APC chairman.
Daily Trust, however, reported that the APC chairman was later killed, while the other two men regained their freedom.
