Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are two major political opposition leaders who may stop President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition. Both politicians have been strategising on the best way to work towards a common goal ahead of the 2027 election.
As a result of this, representatives of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party during the last election, met with Atiku, who was the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, in Abuja recently.
During the meeting, Atiku allegedly suggested a coalition that would make him the presidential candidate while Obi would deputise him. The plan is to repeat the PDP candidate choice during the 2019 general election. The only difference this time is the claim that Atiku will be President for just four years and hand over to Obi should they win the election.
Meanwhile, multiple sources claimed that the approach was immediately rejected by Obi’s representatives. The former Anambra State Governor and his men will never accept the vice president position. This development makes the alleged coalition with Atiku and his camp very unlikely.
Following the failed agreement with Atiku, Obi is said to be planning to officially declare his 2027 presidential ambition.
The founding national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Chekwas Okorie, confirmed the development. He said Obi will never be anybody’s running mate in 2027. Also, he added that the South-East and the Obi’s Movement would strongly reject deals that place Obi in a subordinate role.
“I am in a position to know. Peter Obi will not run as anyone’s running mate. He led his team in a three-day meeting with Atiku’s team, and they could not agree on the vice-presidential offer being speculated in the media,” Okorie revealed, according to Naija News.
“Obi has achieved a level of political mileage that cannot be subsumed under another candidate. Within the week, he will present himself as a presidential contender and may unveil the party platform he intends to use.”
It should be noted that apart from Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, President Tinubu will also battle Nasir El-Rufai. The former Kaduna State Governor has been calling on Nigerians to vote against the President in 2027.
