Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar’s coalition under one political party might have failed before the 2027 election. Obi has assured his supporters that he will contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party.
According to Vanguard, the video circulated on the Labour Party’s WhatsApp platform, featured the former Anambra Governor addressing a group of young supporters. In it, Obi clarified his plans for the next election and addressed concerns about party divisions.
He said, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
Obi pointed out that the crises within the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party are not natural occurrences. He believes that the current government deliberately engineered these issues.
His words, “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere.”
He recalled his experience approaching then-President Yar’Adua to help resolve internal party conflicts. Obi emphasised the need for strong opposition parties to maintain a functional political system.
The former Governor told his supporters that he remained committed to the Labour Party despite the challenges.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that both Peter Obi and Atiku have been vocal about the challenges facing their respective parties. Obi believes that a strong opposition is essential for democracy to thrive. He also stressed that the political system would become unbalanced without opposition parties.
In the video, Obi urged Nigerians to take ownership of their voting rights. He said that voters must ensure their votes count because the ultimate decision rests with them. He further explained that party agents can only do so much to protect votes and encouraged the youth to remain engaged and vigilant during elections.
The Labour Party leader acknowledged that those who benefit from the status quo often resist positive change. He noted that overcoming this resistance is crucial for progress, so his supporters should not lose hope despite the obstacles.
Peter Obi and Atiku have faced internal party challenges that threaten their platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi also touched on a retirement age for politicians seeking public office. He mentioned that he would be 65 years old by the 2027 elections. He would not want to contest for office in his 70s, stressing that youths need to get involved in politics.
Meanwhile, the video has sparked discussions among political observers. Many are watching how Peter Obi and Atiku will navigate the evolving political climate ahead of the 2027 elections.
