Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, reacted to the flooding in Niger State. He urged the Nigerian government to invest in proactive solutions.
The flooding has claimed hundreds of lives and submerged over 3,000 homes in Mokwa Community. Obi expressed deep sadness over the tragic event as he described the scale of destruction as unimaginable.
As a result of the incident, many families have been displaced, and livelihoods destroyed.
The devastation in Niger State shocked many Nigerians and Obi sympathized with victims of the flooding. He highlighted the need for empathy and solidarity in times of crisis. Swift action, he said, is essential to support affected communities.
Speaking further, Obi praised the Niger State governor for responding promptly. He said the governor stood up to help those in need.
Also, the former Anambra State governor called for stronger disaster preparedness. He stressed the urgency to reassess Nigeria’s disaster management systems.
According to him, Nigeria needs to invest in sustainable and proactive measures. He said such investments protect lives and property as many vulnerable riverine communities are especially at risk during rainy seasons.
He also warned that flooding in Niger State is a clear sign which needs urgent government attention. Particularly, as the rainy season continues to pose threats nationwide.
He added that without proper planning, disasters will keep causing damage.
“This tragic disaster is yet another urgent call for Nigeria to reassess and significantly strengthen our disaster preparedness systems.
“We must invest in sustainable and proactive solutions that protect lives and property, particularly in vulnerable riverine communities, as the rainy season continues,” Obi said as reported by Politics Nigeria
